President’s Message – February 2016
Happy New Year!
I hope you have all made a resolution to become more involved in your organization.
It’s the only way for us to continue.
We are pleased to announce that Donald J. Balasa, JD, MBA; the Chief Executive Officer/Legal Counsel for the AAMA, will be our AAMA representative at the New York State Society of Medical Assistants 57th annual convention in Syracuse –April 14-17 at the Embassy Suites. There is a bill (legislation) that has been presented by another group regarding our scope of practice and we will have the opportunity to discuss this with Don. I sent the “language” out to members by email but got a lot back for bad addresses. If you’d like to see this bill (and share your thoughts with me), please send me your email ( ) and I will get it to you. Chapter presidents, please share it with your members.
Convention Details are almost finalized. We will offer 12 CEUs. You are invited to attend the General Assembly (we will conduct the business of the society); the welcome party on Friday evening, the Installation of Officers & Awards Luncheon on Saturday; and we’re trying to put together another type of party for Saturday evening. You are invited and encouraged to attend the pre & post convention meetings and educational sessions.
The Embassy Suites Hotel offers 2 room suites with queen beds, 2 TVs; a microwave, refrigerator; cooked to order breakfast for overnight guests, and a manager’s reception nightly with free cocktails and snacks. We will have our educator’s roundtable breakfast and if we have enough students registered, we will have a session for students on Friday evening before our General Assembly.
The cost is $109 +tax per night. It is a member of the Hilton Hotel family.
Convention Journal are you interested in helping with the NYSSMA convention? Why not place an ad in the journal? The form will be included on the web site. You can take a full page or list your name as a booster and many options in between.
Awards: Do you meet the requirements of our Professional Achievement Award? Take a look at the application form on the web site.
Bylaws: Some of our chapters have been asked to submit your bylaws to the NYSSMA Bylaws Chair. We review chapter bylaws every few years to be sure that they meet the requirements of the AAMA and NYSSMA. If you have heard from Lee Damon and have questions, please let us know.
Dorothy Ross Scholarship –Educators did you encourage your students to apply for this. Information can be found on the web site.
Education: We would be glad to present a seminar in your area if you’d like. We are also here to help chapters that have a seminar.
Mark your calendars—Saturday March 19—Erie Chapter will host its 50th Annual Seminar. If you’re close by, don’t miss it.
Historian If you’re cleaning out things and have NYSSMA info that you’d like to part with, you can bring it to the convention for Lee Damon. If you’re not coming to convention, drop me an email and I will get Lee’s contact info to you.
Marketing & Membership What’s your chapter doing to recruit new members and maintain current members. Chapter Presidents should be able to go to the AAMA web site (www.aama-ntl.org ) and request a current membership list. You can ask Ken Krieger to set you up to get a hard copy each month. It’s a great way to reach out to new or renewed members when they first join. Welcome them ! Encourage involvement ! What are you doing to recruit new members? How do you market the organization? I’d love to hear what you’re doing.
Nominating: It’s the time of the year when the Immediate Past President reaches out to our members seeking volunteers to serve as an officer. If you’re interested, let me know and I will be sure that Sue Vetter gets the information to you. Chapter presidents should have gotten this info already.
NYSSMA Today David Sylvia did a great job with his first issue. If you have anything you would like to share with David for the upcoming issue, please send it to me as soon as possible.
Public Affairs –reminder to contact me if you would like to see the legislative bill that we will discuss at convention. Please let me know if you have had duties taken away because of the “scope of practice”.
Resolutions: If there is an issue or cause you would like to present, Vice President Joann Fisher will be glad to assist in preparing a resolution to present at the upcoming convention. Previous resolutions include paint ball eye injuries, tanning booths, senior falling, ovarian cancer awareness and many more. The majority of our NYSSMA resolutions have gone on to be adopted at the AAMA House of Delegates.
Web Site ; What do you think of the updated version? Please share your thoughts with me. What would you like to see on the site?
Ways & Means –the committee has some great ideas this year. We still have some left over inventory as well. Is there something special you would like to see?
Themed Baskets we will again ask our chapters (and any school or individuals) to donate a basket for our raffle. We have had some great baskets over the years; spa baskets, gardening, wine baskets; something for crafters; a basket with lottery tickets and so many more. We raffle these on Saturday during our last break.
We will have a board meeting in Syracuse on Saturday, February 27th. If there is something you would like addressed, please don’t hesitate to contact me (). This is open to all members at your own expense. If you’d like details, please let me know.
Thank You to those of you that served NYSSMA this term. Incoming President, Joann Fisher will be looking for committee chairs and members. If you already know that you’d like to serve, let me know and I will get the info to her.
Chapter Presidents watch your mail asking for the current (new officers in your chapter. I welcome your “report” of activities you had over the past year to share in the General Assembly.
I’m always looking for help for the General Assembly—I need a couple of notetakers; a head teller and a team for collecting and counting votes and nominations; a page (or two)—you bring messages to people in the meeting; someone to lead us in the Pledge of Allegiance; the creed and two people to serve on the credentials committee (verify that members are eligible to vote).
Thanks for all you do for our organization.
