About the Dorothy Ross Scholarship

About the Dorothy Ross Scholarship

Dorothy Ross was the first president of the New York State Society of Medical Assistants. In 1992 Mrs. Ross donated funds to set up a $500.00 scholarship award each year to a deserving medical assisting student. This winner of the scholarship is announced at the annual convention of the society each year in the Spring.

The past presidents of the society have collected money from the attendees at the annual convention of the society to keep the fund going. The medical assistants attending the convention each year have been generous in their donations.

In mid September of each year the Dorothy Ross Scholarship Committee sends application forms to all CAAHEP accredited medical assisting program in New York State asking that the medical assisting instructors inform their students of this $500.00 scholarship. If you are a medical assisting student and have not heard about this scholarship, please ask your instructor if he/she has a Dorothy Ross Scholarship Application Form that you can fill out and apply to the scholarship Committee or download it from this website for consideration.

Pursuing higher education and obtaining a higher education can be prohibitively expensive and prevents many deserving students from completing college and obtaining their CMA (AAMA) credential.

Student loans help cover the associated costs of learning, but to minimize the daunting cost of student loan repayments, many students seek scholarships and grants. Dorothy Ross, the first President of the New York State Society of Medical Assistants (NYSSMA), donated funds in 1992 to set up a $500.00 scholarship award each year to a deserving medical assisting student who is honored at the annual spring NYSSMA convention, which offers an opportunity to meet medical assistants from around the state, attend educational seminars, and learn more about this professional state organization.

As a current educator and past recipient of the Dorothy Ross Scholarship, I strongly encourage students to apply for this award. Dorothy Ross Scholarship Application Forms are available on the NYSSMA website here -> NYSSMA Documents and have already been distributed to all CAAHEP accredited medical assisting program instructors in New York State and the application deadline for this year is February 14 2015.

The current scholarship award is $500.00 which will be sent to your school to offset tuition and other educational expenses and the recipient will receive dues for AAMA student membership for one year. Membership in these organizations begins the foundation of life-long professional development and relationships. B. David Sylvia, BBA, CMA (AAMA).
